Key Stuck in the Ignition?
A key that will not turn or will not come out of the ignition is frustrating, but forcing it can make things worse. Work through these checks first.
Check the gear and wheel
Many cars only release the key in park, and a steering wheel locked against pressure can stop the key from turning. Rock the wheel gently while you try the key.
Inspect the key itself
A worn or bent key can stick. If you have a spare, try it. A damaged key may need to be replaced and cut fresh.
Look at the battery and shifter
On some vehicles a dead battery or a shifter that is not fully in park keeps the key locked in place. Confirm the car has power.
Do not force it
- Yanking can break the key off inside the cylinder
- Spraying random lubricants can gum up the lock
- Forcing the turn can damage the ignition switch
When to call a locksmith
If the key is stuck, broken, or the ignition cylinder is worn, a locksmith can extract a broken key and service or replace the ignition for many makes on site.

Why will my key not come out?
Most often the car is not fully in park, the wheel is locked, or the key or cylinder is worn. We diagnose which it is before any work begins.
